Building an Addition

One of the first things to consider when planning an addition to your home is which direction you want to go, up or out. If you plan to add on top of existing structure, you'll save more money than building out because foundation work is typically the most pricey part of an addition. When adding on top, you do incur demolition costs but it's usually not as expensive as foundation work.

If you decide to add on to the back or side of your home, check with your zoning official to make sure your minimum offset requirements are met. Another consideration is the overall cost of the addition compared to the value it will add to your home. Sometimes it's cheaper to move to a bigger house than to build onto your current home.

Once you make your decision, be sure you start with the right plan. It usually pays to have an architect draw your plans. (We work closely with Bishop & Smith Architects.)
